Refugee and Newcomer Coalition Meeting

On March 24th, ACCL hosted the fourth monthly meeting for Refugee and Newcomer Coalition. This was the second time the meeting was held at the center. The refugee and newcomer coalition was formed by through the Lowell Public Refugee Grant, and the contract work by myself through the African Community Center. The refugee and newcomer coalition is a coalition of agencies and groups who are concerned about the needs of our refugees and newcomer families, and are looking to improve their living standards. On Friday, there were three presenters from different departments. Immigration attorney Megan Walls presented at the refugee and newcomer coalition.

Megan Walls has assisted with immigration and asylum as a pro bono attorney for Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) and has also worked in the offices of Hillary Clinton (Senate) and Andrew Cuomo (Attorney General) on legal projects and appellate review. She also served in the Peace Corps as an urban youth specialist in Ecuador. Her practice areas include criminal law, business litigation, family law, and street law education at a local high school, and other actions involving litigation. She is also the broker and co-owner of the real estate group, Boston Fine Properties. She has also worked as an adjunct professor in the department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at UMass Lowell. She currently practices as Corporate Counsel at Wellesley Asset Management, Inc., and handles a number of private client matters through her own practice. Ms. Walls holds a JD from Georgetown Law, with a certificate degree in Humanitarian Assistance and Refugee Emergencies from Georgetown Institute of Migration Studies, and a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University
