Community Voices: Time with Lowell Police Department

Date: January 16, 2025

Location: 99 Church St., Lowell, Mass.

The African Community Center of Lowell (ACCL) hosted a significant event as part of its Community Voices program on January 16, 2025, at 99 Church St., Lowell. This meeting brought together community leaders, members, and representatives from the Lowell Police Department (LPD), to discuss issues surrounding safety, collaboration, and community involvement. The shared objective was to work toward protecting all members of the City of Lowell.

The meeting was led by Mr. Gordon Donkoh-Halm, Executive Director of ACCL, alongside the organization's Board members who together presented a wonderful African artifact to LPD. The LPD was represented by four officers, demonstrating their commitment to engaging directly with the community they serve. A notable portion of attendees consisted of community members who primarily spoke Haitian Creole. To ensure effective communication and inclusivity, the event was facilitated by Sabrina, a skilled interpreter, whose assistance was invaluable in bridging any language barriers.

The discussions focused on several key topics:

Community Safety: Strategies to improve public safety were thoroughly examined, with community members sharing their concerns and suggestions. The dialogue emphasized the importance of mutual trust and open communication between the police department and local residents.

Collaboration Efforts: Both parties explored ways to enhance collaboration. Initiatives such as community policing, neighborhood watch programs, and cultural competency training for law enforcement were highlighted as potential areas for joint efforts.

Community Involvement: The meeting underscored the need for active community participation in safety programs. Residents were encouraged to engage in ongoing dialogues and contribute to solutions that reflect their unique perspectives and needs.

The atmosphere of the meeting was productive and positive, with attendees expressing gratitude for the opportunity to voice their concerns and collaborate on solutions. The involvement of an interpreter ensured that all voices were heard, fostering a sense of inclusion and respect.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Gordon Donkoh-Halm thanked the LPD for their willingness to engage with the community and emphasized the importance of sustained partnerships. The meeting concluded with a commitment to follow-up actions, including regular check-ins and the implementation of agreed-upon initiatives.

The Community Voices program continues to demonstrate the ACCL's dedication to fostering a safer, more unified Lowell. This meeting marked another step forward in building trust and collaboration between the community and local law enforcement.
